Life Sciences Division Staff Member Receives "National
Environmental Excellence Award"
Fred Baes received a "National Environmental Excellence Award" from the
National Association of Environmental Professionals for his contributions
to and participation in the DOE "Biota Dose Assessment Committee" (BDAC).
BDAC is charged with developing a manual, "A Graded Approach for Evaluating
Radiation Doses to Aquatic and Terrestrial Biota," which provides a screening
methodology, methods for detailed analyses, and related guidance that
DOE and DOE-contractors may use to evaluate the effects of ionizing radiation
to populations of aquatic animals, terrestrial plants, and terrestrial
animals to meet the requirements of DOE Orders 5400.1 and 5400.5. In support
of BDAC and the manual, Baes designed and maintains an "internal" Web
site where BDAC members can log on and share comments on draft versions
of the manual, exchange support documents an analyses, log conference
call notes, and participate in on-line discussion forums during the development
of the manual. A public version of the BDAC Web site is available at http://homer.ornl.gov/oepa/public/bdac/.
Baes is a staff member in the Toxicology and Risk Analysis Section
of the Life Sciences Division.
