Life Sciences Division Staff Members
Achieve Rank of Diplomat of the American Board of Toxicology
Drs. Robin Brothers and Paul Selby, staff members in the
Toxicology and Risk Analysis Section of the ORNL Life Sciences
Division, recently achieved the rank of Diplomat of the American
Board of Toxicology. This brings the number of certified
toxicologists in Life Sciences to nine (Drs. Cheryl Bast, Tim Borges,
Robin Brothers, Kowetha Davidson, Carol Forsyth, Sylvia Milanez, Paul
Selby, Sylvia Talmage, and Bob Young).
The American Board of Toxicology is organized to encourage the
study of science of toxicology, to stimulate its advancement by
establishing standards for professional practice, to prepare and
administer procedures including tests for the implementation of such
standards, and to confer recognition by certificates or otherwise
upon those members of the profession who, measured against such
standards, demonstrate competence. The ABT certification is
recognized as the standard for competence in general toxicology based
on demonstration of appropriate educational background, active
practice of toxicology, and examination. The Certification
Examination is composed of three major subject areas: Toxicity of
Agents, Organ Systems and Effects, and General Principles and Applied
Toxicology. Eligible applicants must pass all parts of the exam
within a two-year period. Thereafter, recertification is required
every five years. ABTs certification process is recognized
world-wide, thus providing a consistent international standard of
competence and expertise on toxicology issues.
