Humane Society Report Features Review by Foltz
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) Pain and Distress Report,
Fall 2000, featured a review of an article published by Charmaine Foltz, DVM,
Laboratory Animal Resources Section Head. The article, "Guidelines for
Assessing the Health and Condition of Mice," was initially published
in Lab Animal, April 1999. The HSUS Pain and Distres Report is part of an
initiative by the HSUS to eliminate pain and distress for research animals
and reports on progress toward that goal. The article by Dr. Foltz and her
colleague, Mollie Ullman-Cullere demonstrate commitment to ensuring animal
welfare and minimizing pain and distress in mice used in research. Recognition
of this commitment by the HSUS is evidence of opponents of animal research
and the research community reaching out to recognize common goals.
