Researchers Develop In Situ Remediation Approach (April 2000)

A promising in situ remediation approach using enhanced delivery of permanganate through vertical lance permeation for in situ oxidation of TCE in fine grain soils was selected for deployment at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PORTS). The approach has been developed by researchers in the ORNL Life Sciences and Environmental Sciences Divisions. A kick-off meeting between project principal investigators and IT Corporation was held to discuss final design issues for deployment at the Portsmouth X-701B site. The option to treat a larger area using vertical lance permeation including the upper weathered Sunbury formation is being evaluated. A clear picture of the preferred path forward including associated costs, risks, and benefits for additional scope as well and the planned delivery to the Minford formation is expected in early May.
