NASA Visit to ORNL (July 2000)

Representatives of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Johnson Space Center (NASA/JSC), NASA Ames Research Center, Universities Space Research Association (USRA), and California Institute of Technology Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) visited ORNL on June 22 - 23, 2000, to discuss teaming possibilities in life sciences research areas important to the United States’ space mission. Those participating in the visit were:

Mark S. Clarke, USRA; Lakshmi Putcha, NASA/JSC; Marina A. Saltman, Consultant to NASA/Ames; Donald J. Stilwell, NASA/JSC; and Dean V. Wiberg, JPL. The visit was arranged by David Bartine, consultant to ORNL on assignment at NASA/JSC, and was hosted by the ORNL Life Sciences Division. Discussions and laboratory tours were provided by principal investigators in Chemical and Analytical Sciences, Chemical Technology, Computational Physics and Engineering, Instrumentation and Controls, and Life Sciences Divisions. Each of the visitors indicated that multiple ORNL technologies with direct applications to NASA programmatic goals had been identified during the visit, and that these will be communicated to responsible NASA staff for follow-up discussions. Don Stilwell and J. S. Bogard (ORNL Life Sciences Division) will establish and maintain metrics to track the success of the visit in terms of resulting collaborative research proposals submitted and funded.
