Computational Biology Section Contributes to Human Genome
Project Research (February 2001)
Ed
Uberbacher, section head of the Life Sciences Division's Computational
Biology Section, is listed as a co-author in the DOE Joint Genome Institute
in a groundbreaking publication of a draft sequence and initial analysis
of the human genome. The paper, released by the Human Genome Project international
consortium, is being published in the February 15 issue of the journal
Nature. ORNL has been teaming with the DOE Joint Genome Institute,
and performed the analysis and annotation of the DOE portion of the sequence.
The scientific work reported here will serve as a basis for research and
discovery in the coming decades and will have profound long-term consequences
for medicine. It will help elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms
of disease, which will in turn allow researchers to design better drugs
and therapies for many illnesses. (Contact: Ed Uberbacher, 574-6134 or
