Nuclear Medicine Group's research on coronary restenosis
Life Sciences Division's Dr. Russ Knapp and the Nuclear
Medicine Group are currently involved in research concerning
prevention of restenosis following coronary angioplasty. In
many cases, plaque will reform on arterial walls (restenosis)
following "balloon" therapy (angioplasty) to open clogged arteries.
Dr. Knapp has developed a procedure to prevent the restenosis which
involves using a beta-emitter to fill the "balloon" during therapy.
Research and development of this technique is being conducted
in conjunction with the Nuclear Medicine Group's national and
international collaboratives.
